Okay, felt like posting up a chess special, since I'm so into chess these days.
Alright to start learn to play chess, theres always helpful tutorials you can find online just by searching. Theres always asking for friendly neighbourhood chess player.
Now that we have that out of the way, chess is actually a pretty fun way to spend the time.

Alright, not so much if your a beginner, but it gets better as you progress. It's a game that rewards your concentration, skills of observation and most importantly, real-time strategic thinking. (Not only for ah-peks like some people *winks* says)
On the contrary, you need a pretty good memory to excel in this game. Forget for a moment why you placed your house in that spot and thats game over right there.
Which brings me to my favourite moment in chess, the check! Nothing beats being able to say 'checkmate!' to your friend and watching his/her sign of resignation =D.

Of course, in English chess, theres always the stalemate scenario which is often unavoidable in a massacre game (The opponent kills everything save for your king ) In this case, the opponent ends up placing your king in a position where you can't move anywhere without being in an open check and the game is drawn.
Chess generally requires patience and a clear mind. Contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT have to think ten steps ahead or have a clairvoyant mind. You simply need to be able to predict your opponents next move. The most common mistake a player makes is to place a piece in a spot already targeted by an enemy, leading to a 'freekill' for your opponent.
Of course, there are always those *ahem* Chingjun *ahem* who don't really consider before making their moves. 'yessir!' 'nosir!' 'oh crap sir' >.<, which actually makes them harder to counter because its sometimes really hard to predict where they're going with their
current move set.
